Technology Access Centres (TAC) grants are intended to enhance the ability of companies, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), to become more productive and innovative by enabling them to readily access college expertise, technology and equipment. This access to college capabilities is intended to enhance the productivity, competitiveness and innovation of the participating SMEs.

Use of funds Most costs to operate an applied research centre, including: faculty release costs; student salaries; research/technical assistants; incremental costs of basic services, such as heat, light, water, compressed air, distilled water, vacuums and janitorial services supplied to all laboratories in a research facility; administrative personnel of the centre; equipment or facility rental or purchase; travel for business development or service delivery; advertising and project management; costs of hospitality and promotional material for networking and business development purposes.
Duration of award Five years
Are multiple colleges involved? Technology Access Centres can be associated with more than one college (through their advisory board).
Typical application success rate Approximately 20% (based on the number of letters of intent)
Typical grant range $350,000 per year for five years
Type of partners required Canadian-based companies (especially small and medium-sized enterprises), colleges, industry associations, public utilities and government agencies
Minimum company contribution Companies are not required to contribute to a Technology Access Centre. However it is expected that companies will want to purchase services and applied research support from the Centre.
